Primož Roglič, one of the favourites for the overall ranking of the Tour de France, suffered a serious fall on his shoulder and hip on the 12th stage from Aurillac to Villeneuve-sur-Lot. The Slovenian, who was previously fourth in the overall ranking, was involved in a mass crash but was able to continue riding afterwards. However, he lost more than two minutes to the leader Tadej Pogačar. Roglič slipped to sixth place in the overall ranking.
The overall leader Pogačar was not affected by the mass crash and remains in the yellow jersey. He is still 1:06 minutes ahead of the Belgian time trial world champion Remco Evenepoel in the overall ranking. Third is defending champion Jonas Vingegaard, 1:14 minutes behind.
Biniam Girmay from Eritrea won the sprint to the finish in Villeneuve-sur-Lot ahead of Belgian Wout van Aert and Frenchman Arnaud Démare. For Girmay, this is already the third stage victory in this year’s Tour de France. Ten days ago, the Eritrean became the first black professional cyclist from an African country to ever win a Tour stage.

In the warm, humid temperatures of southwest France, the first attacks by three breakaway riders began shortly after the start, and they were able to gain a three-minute lead over the main field. However, they were unable to maintain their lead for long on the 203.6-kilometer route. The peloton caught up with the three breakaway riders around 40 kilometers from the finish.
The day was also marked by several early retirements from professional cyclists, including Dutch sprinter Fabio Jakobsen, who won a Tour stage in 2022.
On tomorrow’s 13th stage from Agen to Pau, the sprinters can also hope for a sprint finale. On the last flat stage before the difficult mountain classifications in the Pyrenees, anything else would be a surprise. From a German perspective, Pascal Ackermann and Phil Bauhaus have the next chance to win a stage in the 111th edition of the Tour de France.
