Tragedy Strikes: 17-Year-Old Chinese Badminton Player Dies After Collapsing on Court in Indonesia

A 17-year-old Chinese player has died after collapsing on court during an Asian tournament in Indonesia’s Yogyakarta province, the Indonesian Badminton Association said Monday.

Zhang Zhijie was playing against Japan’s Kazuma Kawano at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships on Sunday when he collapsed and went into convulsions.

Badminton officials said medical teams treated Zhang on the court and took him by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

He was later referred to Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, one of the main government hospitals in Yogyakarta.

“The conclusion of the examination and treatment of the victim at both hospitals showed the same results, namely that the victim experienced sudden cardiac arrest,” Broto Happy, spokesman for the Indonesian Badminton Association, told reporters at a press conference.

Yogyakarta badminton players and officials paid tribute to Zhang by observing a minute of silence on court on Monday morning before the quarter-finals.

The Chinese Badminton Association offered its condolences and support to Zhang’s family, describing him as a player who “loved badminton and was an outstanding athlete of the national youth team.”
