Tragedy Strikes: Chinese Badminton Player Zhang Zhijie Dies on Court at Asian Junior Championships

KUALA LUMPUR:Zhang Zhijie, a promising Chinese badminton player aged just 17, tragically lost his life after collapsing on the court during the Asian Junior Badminton Mixed Team Championships held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

The incident took place on Sunday at the GOR Entre Raga during the third match between China and Japan. The score was tied 11-11 in the first game when Zhijie, facing Kazuma Kawano, suddenly fell to the ground.

Zhijie began convulsing on the court as the medical team rushed to provide him with first aid. He was immediately taken to hospital, where, despite intensive medical efforts, he died at 11:20 p.m. local Indonesian time.

Badminton Asia, the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) and the event organizers issued a joint statement mourning the loss: “Chinese player Zhang Zhijie collapsed on the court during the afternoon match. He was rushed to the hospital and died at 11:20 p.m. local time yesterday.” They expressed their sincere condolences to the parents, family and the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA), noting that “the badminton world has lost a talented player.”

The tournament, which takes place from June 28 to July 2 for the mixed team category, will continue with individual competitions from July 3 to 7.
