Tragedy Strikes Chinese Badminton Youth: Promising Player Zhang Zhijie Dies During Match

Foreign media outlets, including Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) and AFP, reported on the 1st (Korean time) that Chinese national men’s singles player Zhang Zhijie (17) collapsed on the court while playing in the mixed team event group stage of the 2024 Asian Youth Badminton Championships held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on the 30th, and died after being taken to the hospital.

Zhang Zhijie suddenly fell to the floor while the score was tied 11-11 in the first set against Japan’s Kazuma Kawano. Medical staff arrived and he was taken to the hospital by ambulance within a few minutes, but he never recovered and was pronounced dead at 11:20 PM local time. His cause of death is still unknown.

Born in 2007, Zhang Zhijie is a promising player who took the top spot in the men’s singles and men’s team events at the National Youth Badminton Championships last year. She was selected to represent the youth team and won the championship at this year’s Netherlands Youth Badminton Championships.

“The world of badminton has lost a talented player. We express our deepest condolences to the player’s parents, family and the China Badminton Association,” the Badminton Federation of Asia, the Indonesian Badminton Association and the Organizing Committee of the Asian Junior Badminton Championships said in a joint statement.
