Zhijie collapsed in the first set while facing Japan’s Kazuma Kawano. “He was treated by the tournament doctor and medical staff (and) was taken to the emergency ambulance within two minutes and sent to hospital,” the Badminton Confederation of Asia and the Badminton Federation of Indonesia (PBSI) said in a joint press release. The hospital has not yet been able to identify the cause of death, according to the Chinese Badminton Federation, which joined the two organizations in expressing “deepest condolences to the parents and family” of the player. The badminton world is in mourning on Monday.
