Tragic Death of 17-Year-Old Badminton Star Zhang Zhi Jie Mourned by World

The badminton world is mourning the tragic death of 17-year-old Zhang Zhi Jie, who suddenly fainted due to illness during a match at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta and died late on Sunday evening, June 30, later in the city hospital.

The Chinese Badminton Association expressed its “deep sorrow” and offered its condolences to the young athlete’s family, also thanking the support received from various sectors of society. Born on January 30, 2007, Zhi Jie joined the ranks of the Chinese junior team in 2023 and achieved numerous exploits including winning the singles and team titles at the 2023 and 2024 China Youth Badminton Championships.

The statement released by the Asian Badminton Federation and the Indonesian Badminton Association states that Zhang Zhi Jie “was rescued by the available emergency ambulance and transferred to the hospital in less than two minutes” but that “despite their efforts, the professionals present were unable to save the young man’s life”. This news would contradict the various conjectures and reconstructions that emerged immediately after this absurd tragedy and which criticized the lack of defibrillators on site. At the moment, the local hospital has not yet clarified the cause of death and the authorities’ investigations are still ongoing.
