Tragic Death of 17-Year-Old Chinese Badminton Player Zhang Zhijie at Tournament in Indonesia

Badminton tragedy. A 17-year-old Chinese boy, Zhang Zhijie, died on the court during a match after suddenly feeling ill. He had a cardiac arrest on Sunday, June 30, at a tournament in Indonesia during the match against Japan’s Kazuma Kawano at the Asian Junior Championships in Jakarta. The score was 11-11 when Zhang fell to the ground. The boy was immediately rescued and rushed to hospital by ambulance, but died during the night.

“He suffered a sudden cardiac arrest,” Broto Happy, spokesperson for the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI), said at a press conference. “The world of badminton has lost a talented player,” Badminton Asia and PBSI said in a statement.

According to local media, Zhang started playing badminton in kindergarten and joined the Chinese junior national team last year. He also won the singles title at the Dutch Junior International, a prestigious youth tournament, in early 2024. The Chinese Badminton Federation said it was “deeply saddened” by the tragedy. India’s Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, who won a silver at Rio 2016 and a bronze in Tokyo, called Zhang’s death “absolutely heartbreaking.”
