Tragic Death of Chinese Badminton Player Zhang Zhijie at 2024 Asian Junior Championships

Zhang Zhijie[1] (Jiaxing, June 30, 2007 – Yogyakarta, June 30, 2024) was a Chinese badminton player.

Zhang won the 2024 Dutch Junior International by defeating compatriot Hu Zhe’an 21–10, 11–21, 13–21.

Zhang then reached the final of the 2024 German Junior, losing to Wang Zijun 13–21, 21–16, 16–21.

In a match at the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championships, Zhang was playing against Kazuma Kawano when he collapsed on the court with the score at 11-11 and died of cardiac arrest.

Indian badminton player PV Sindhu and Malaysian badminton player Lee Chong Wei expressed their condolences to Zhang’s family. The World Badminton Federation, Badminton Asia, the China Badminton Association and the Indonesian Badminton Association said they were deeply saddened by Zhang’s loss.

Chinese netizens and Xinhua News Agency criticized the events leading up to her death after a video showed a doctor running toward Zhang, then stopping at the edge of the court to wait for the umpire’s permission. In response, the Indonesian Badminton Association announced it would ask the World Badminton Federation to reconsider the rule requiring doctors to wait for permission before attending to players.

At the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championships awards ceremony, Zhang’s jersey was raised on the podium. He was awarded the gold medal posthumously.
