Tragic Death of Chinese Badminton Player Zhang Zhijie at Asian Junior Championships

Chinese badminton player Zhang Zhijie, 17, died Sunday of unidentified causes while competing in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships in Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia.

The young badminton player was facing Japanese Kazuma Kawano when he fell ill in the first set. “He was treated by the tournament doctor and medical team (and) was transported to the emergency ambulance in less than two minutes and sent to hospital,” the Badminton Confederation of Asia and the Badminton Federation of Indonesia (PBSI) said in a joint press release.

The young player died after being taken to hospital, according to the same statement. “At this time, the local hospital has not yet identified the cause of death,” said the Chinese Badminton Federation, which joined the two organizations behind the statement in expressing its “deepest condolences to the parents and family” of the player.

Earlier this year, Zhijie won the prestigious Dutch Junior International tournament in Haarlem, Netherlands. On Monday, a minute of silence was observed as the team tournament continued. The Chinese team wore black armbands in tribute. “The world has lost a remarkable talent today,” Pusarla Ventaka Sindhu, an Indian badminton player who won silver and bronze at the 2016 and 2021 Olympics, wrote on social media platform X.
