A look at the match between Zhang Zhijie and the Indonesian Badminton Federation X Galmuri
On the evening of the 30th of last month, Chinese badminton player Zhang Zhijie (張志杰), who was participating in the final match of the mixed team group stage at the Asian Youth Championships held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, suddenly fainted and was taken to the hospital for emergency treatment, but died.
According to Chinese media on the 1st, Zhang Zhijie suddenly fainted and suffered a violent convulsion when he was about to catch the ball in an 11-11 match against Toshizane Kawano in the men’s singles of Japan. The tournament’s medical staff rushed to rescue him and took him to the hospital by ambulance in less than 2 minutes, but he died at 23:20 local time.
The Chinese government has not officially revealed the cause of Zhang Zhijie’s death. However, the Indonesian Badminton Association said, “After examining and treating Zhang Zhijie at two hospitals, the results showed that he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.”
Badminton players and officials in Yogyakarta paid tribute to Zhang Zhijie by observing a minute of silence on the court on the morning of the 1st ahead of the quarterfinals. The Badminton Asia Federation mourned Zhang Zhijie’s death on social media.
Zhang Zhijie started playing badminton in kindergarten and joined the Chinese national youth team last year. Earlier this year, he won the singles title at the Netherlands Junior International Championships.
