During the match with an opponent from Japan, the Chinese player collapsed on the court and was treated by medical staff, but was declared dead at the hospital. “The conclusion of the examination and treatment of the victim at two hospitals showed the same results, namely that the victim suffered a sudden cardiac arrest,” said Broto Happy, spokesman for the Indonesian Badminton Association.

A video posted online shows a wait of nearly 40 seconds before Zhang was treated by emergency personnel, raising questions about whether timely medical attention could have saved his life.

Zhang joined the national youth team in 2023, won many championships and ranked eighth in the world rankings in the junior men’s singles category. The Asian Badminton Confederation stressed that “they have lost a talented player.”
