The badminton world has been rocked by the death of 17-year-old Chinese star Zhang Zhijie. He died during a match at the Asian Junior Badminton Championships in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta and early on Monday the China Badminton Federation expressed its condolences over the sad news.

Zhang, born on January 30, 2007, fainted suddenly on June 30 during the final match of the group stage of the tournament in the city, located in the center of Indonesia’s most populous island of Java: organizers reported that, despite immediate efforts by medical staff on site, Zhang died in hospital at 11.20pm local time.

The Chinese Badminton Association expressed its “deep sorrow” and offered its condolences to the young athlete’s family, also thanking the support received from various sectors of society.
Young Zhang Zhijie was originally from Jiaxing, Zhejiang province in eastern China, and joined the national junior team in 2023 and has achieved numerous accolades in recent times: he won the men’s singles and team titles at the 2023 and 2024 China Youth Badminton Championships.

After the event, there was much criticism and debate on social networks about the effectiveness of the doctors during the event: many health workers questioned the lack of use of external defibrillators and CPR on site, with the images leaving little room for doubt.
The statement released by the Asian Badminton Federation and the Indonesian Badminton Association said that Zhang Zhijie “was taken by the available emergency ambulance and transferred to the hospital in less than two minutes,” but that “unfortunately, it was not possible to save the young man’s life.” The local hospital has not yet determined the cause of death and the investigation is ongoing.
