A teenage badminton player who was considered a promising prospect died while playing in the Asian Youth Championships.
At that time, he collapsed on the court, suffered a seizure, was immediately transferred to the hospital and received emergency treatment, but eventually passed away.
According to foreign media outlets such as the Hong Kong media South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 1st (local time), Chinese badminton player Zhang Zhijie (張志杰, 17) suddenly collapsed while playing in the mixed team event group stage of the ‘2024 Asian Youth Badminton Championships’ held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia the previous evening.
At that time, Jang Jin-eun was about to catch the ball in an 11-11 match with Japanese men’s singles player Toshizane Kawano when she suddenly fainted and suffered a seizure.
The competition medical staff rushed to administer emergency treatment, and within two minutes he was transported to the hospital by ambulance, but he was pronounced dead at 11:20 PM local time.
The Chinese government has not officially released the cause of Zhang Zhijie’s death.
However, the Indonesian Badminton Association said, “After examining and treating Zhang Zhize at two hospitals, it was found that he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.”
Afterwards, the Badminton Asia Federation, the Indonesian Badminton Association, and the Organizing Committee of this competition jointly issued a statement, saying, “The badminton world has lost a talented player,” and expressed condolences to Zhang Zhijie’s family. Athletes and officials from each country also observed a minute of silence on the court on the morning of the 1st ahead of the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Zhang Zhijie, born in 2007, started playing badminton in kindergarten and was selected as a member of the Chinese youth national team last year. He won both the men’s singles and team events at the National Youth Badminton Championships last year, and won the singles at the Netherlands Youth Badminton Championships earlier this year.
