Zhang Zhijie, facing Kazuma Kawano, suddenly fell at the Yogyakarta tournament. After hitting the ground, he was quickly assisted by medical personnel who tried to rescue him while he was convulsing. Despite being taken by ambulance to the hospital, he sadly passed away shortly after.
Badminton Asia and the Badminton Association of Indonesia confirmed that he received immediate attention from the tournament doctor.
The badminton world is mourning the loss of this talented player, an official statement said. PBSI spokesperson Broto Happy told a press conference that medical reports indicate that the victim suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.
