Tragic Loss: Chinese Badminton Player Zhang Zhi Jie Dies During Asian Championship

JAKARTA – Sad news is enveloping the world of badminton. Young Chinese badminton player Zhang Zhi Jie, during the Badminton Asian Championship (BAJC) 2024 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Sunday, June 30, 2024.

Zhang Zhi Jie suddenly fell while preparing to accept the serve from his opponent, Kazuma Kawano (Japan). At that time, the score of the match was tied at 11-11.

The Chinese tank player fell into a knife and suffered a brain seizure. The medical team was unable to enter the field to provide assistance on the applicant’s orders approximately 40 seconds after Zhi Jie fell.

According to statements from Badminton Asia and PBSI, Zhi Jie fainted on the court and was then taken to Dr. S. Hardjolukito Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 23:20 WIB.

First aid has been in the spotlight of the badminton community. The medical team is deemed too long to enter the court and made Zhi Jie late for treatment.

The video related to the slow pace of medical care has gone viral on social media and has received a lot of responses from netizens.

PBSI Public Relations and Media Officer Broto Happy explained that for a long time, the medical team treated Zhi Jie was not a mistake as it is in line with BWF’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

As we know, the receiver has the full right to authorize the medical team to enter the field. If he has not received instructions from the receiver, the medical team will not be authorized to act automatically.

“The game management is completely run by the receivers. If you look at the video, the receivers don’t exist or they didn’t decide to call the medical team on the field. That’s what I can say. If that’s true, maybe you can ask the receiver,” Broto Happy said.

To refer to the BWF SOP, there are indeed two main types of referees in international badminton tournaments, namely an umpire and a referee.

Umpire is a field referee, while referee is a tournament referee.

Umpire is only responsible for one match that he has managed. That is to say, the umpire is more in charge of technical matters on the field than recording points.

Meanwhile, the referees have bigger and more complex tasks. The referees are responsible for the entire tournament in order to operate in accordance with the badminton law based on the BWF regulations.

That is, this receiver leads the empires on duty on the field. Umpire will report the match to the receiver.

Not only that, refugees even have a burden to ensure that athletes get facilities that meet standards, security, to regulate transportation.

As the leader, it turns out that it is the refugee who holds the rights related to the medical team’s permission to take action.

Therefore, the big question has arisen whether the players of the 2024 Badminton Asia Under-17 Championship should be held responsible for the incident that happened to Zhi Jie.

PBSI also responded diplomatically to the issue. As the host, it will coordinate with Badminton Asia and BWF on SOPs in granting clearances for the medical team.

“Maybe we could send a letter to the BWF about the rules under which the medical team can come in after the refugee calls have to be faster.”

“In an emergency, the rules can be broken. All for the safety of the athletes and the good of all players.”

“So, (this incident is) a contribution for BWF. There might be different views on entering the field. In short, we are working as per the SOPs.”

“This was our contribution. Of course, we communicate with the receivers. In the future, our work together should not happen, although undesirable. Thanks to your contribution, I hope that in the future it will be safe and healthy,” Broto Happy said again.
