National Youth Team member Zhang Zhijie died at 23:20 local time on June 30, 2024 due to ineffective rescue. He was 17 years old.

Zhang Zhijie was born in Jiaxing in 2007. He started playing badminton in the last year of kindergarten. He was sent to the Zhejiang provincial team in the third grade of elementary school and joined the national youth team in 2023.

He won the men’s singles championship in the 15-year-old group of the 2022 National U Series Badminton Competition U15-17 Finals, the men’s singles championship and men’s team championship in Group B of the 2023 National Youth Badminton Championships, the men’s singles championship in the 2024 Netherlands Youth Badminton International Championships, and the men’s team championship in Group B of the 2024 National Youth Badminton Championships.

Chinese singles player Zhang Zhijie fainted on the court during a match in the evening and died at 23:20 local time yesterday after being rushed to the hospital.

Zhang Zhijie fainted during the group match against Japan, and the tournament doctor and medical team gave him first aid. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance in less than two minutes.

Badminton Asia, the Indonesian Badminton Association and the organizing committee are deeply saddened by this and extend their deepest condolences to Zhang Zhijie’s parents, family and the Chinese Badminton Association.
