Turk Demiral scores fastest goal in knockout match

Turkey’s Merih Demiral set a European Championship record on Tuesday. His goal to make it 1-0 in the round of 16 against Austria, scored after 57 seconds, was the earliest goal ever scored in the knockout phase of a European Championship. UEFA announced this in the evening.

On the second day of this tournament, the fastest goal in European Championship history was scored: Albanian Nedim Bajrami scored the 1-0 goal after 23 seconds in the 1-2 defeat against Italy.

According to sports data provider Opta, Demiral’s goal was also the earliest goal conceded in an international match for the ÖFB team since October 31, 1965. Back then, Jürgen Nöldner also scored in the first minute for the GDR in the World Cup qualifiers in front of 95,000 spectators, also in Leipzig, to secure a 1-0 win.
