When Mert Günok dashed Austria’s desperate hopes at the 2024 European Championship at the last second, Ralf Rangnick was reminded of one of the most spectacular saves in football history. “With Gordon Banks in goal, we missed the last big chance,” lamented the team boss after Günok secured Turkey’s 2-1 (1-0) win in the round of 16 thriller with an “unbelievable” save.
In Leipzig, injury time was already running in a thrilling European Championship match when Austria’s Christoph Baumgartner headed the ball in the six-yard box and almost celebrated the equalizer. But Günok prevented the equalizer with an “unbelievable reflex” that was reminiscent of Gordon Banks’ legendary save against Pelé at the 1970 World Cup, by skilfully directing the ball past the goal and thus preventing extra time.
