Turkish ambassador summoned after Demiral’s gesture, Erdogan also present in Berlin

Germany has summoned its ambassador to Turkey following Demiral’s controversial celebration against Austria on Tuesday. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be present at the match against the Netherlands.

Germany summoned Turkey’s ambassador to Berlin on Thursday morning, a foreign ministry spokeswoman said, after a controversial gesture by Turkish defender Merih Demiral during a Euro 2024 match prompted UEFA to open an investigation.

On Wednesday, Turkey summoned the German ambassador to Ankara to protest against the remarks of a German minister condemning the gesture of defender Merih Demiral, who had made the rallying sign of the “Grey Wolves”a Turkish far-right group, during the round of 16 match against Austria on Tuesday (2-1).

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will travel to Berlin for the quarter-final against the Netherlands on Saturday at 9 p.m. A match that will be closely watched by authorities after the Demiral controversy and recent geopolitical tensions in Germany and Turkey.
