UEFA suspends Demiral for 2 matches for celebrating his goal

The UEFA has suspended Merih Demiral from the parties, Turkey’s defender, for the gestures made in celebration of the goal against Austria in the round of 16 match of the Eurocup.

As ‘Bild’ reported, the defender will receive this punishment from the organisation after making the ‘Grey Wolf’ symbolan Ottoman-based movement linked to the far right. Any type of political message or symbolism is prohibited in this international tournament.

A gesture of the extreme right

Demiral will miss the quarter-final clash against the Netherlands and a hypothetical semi-finall. The Turk made a gesture with both hands resembling a wolf’s head, a characteristic symbol of the ‘Ulkucu’ movement, also known as the Grey Wolves. This Turkish organization is classified as terrorist, ultra-nationalist, neo-fascist and Islamist, and according to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, it has more than 12,000 members in Germany.

The grey wolf is particularly significant to Turkish right-wing extremists, often being used symbolically.
