Uli Hoeneß Speaks Out on Football, Young Talent, and More!

Uli Hoeneß (72) speaks out!

The A-class club SV Seligenporten from the Neumarkt district is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the honorary president of FC Bayern was invited to give a talk.

For the club’s patron, it is the first major public appearance since his guest appearance at the FAZ Congress in Frankfurt, when he caused unrest with sharp criticism of former coach Thomas Tuchel (50) shortly before the Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid.

Three months later, he is also not mincing his words – also with regard to the extremely large hype surrounding DFB stars Jamal Musiala (20/FC Bayern) and Florian Wirtz (21/Leverkusen) during the European Championship.

Hoeneß made it clear: “I am a friend of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz. We all know that I would love to see him at Bayern Munich. I think the hype surrounding them is wrong. Under these pressures, they cannot develop as they should. I think it is madness to compare Jamal with Maradona. It does the young players no favors. There is no question that they can get to that level. But I think it is a huge mistake to put them under so much pressure now.”

During the European Championships, Hoeneß also realised once again that the DFB has a problem with young talent. He says: “I am someone who thinks very internationally, but the best is a Klaus Augenthaler from Vilshofen, that is better than someone from Brazil. You have to change the culture, the language. It is good if someone like that can be integrated, but it would be best if we had young German players. We have to come up with a lot of ideas in this area, something has to happen.”

Do more former international players need to get involved in the development of young talent? This was recently suggested by Berti Vogts (77).

Hoeneß took a dig at Michael Ballack: “Berti is a dreamer of the good old days. In principle, I think the idea is brilliant. The only question is whether Michael Ballack is prepared to coach the German U19s or whether he would rather buy pictures at some vernissage in London. In general, that would be a good solution. But whether the players in question are prepared to work five days a week…”

The club’s boss is particularly fond of Spaniard Lamine Yamal (17) at the European Championships. Hoeneß is enthusiastic about him and can’t resist taking a dig at Bayern’s left-back Alphonso Davies (23). The ex-boss: “The way he does it – left and right. I wish Alphonso Davies could do that too.”

Hoeneß only watched one game in the stadium – France against Spain. In general, he thought the ticket prices for the tournament were outrageous. He explained: “We have a box in the Allianz Arena through a company. We had to make this box available to UEFA free of charge for the European Championship. 14 days before the European Championship, we were contacted and told that we could rent a box. And it would cost 2,500 euros per ticket just for the Scotland game. That’s 39,000 euros for 13 seats.”

And he continued: “We said we could forget about them and we didn’t rent them. And what was the consequence? It was empty for the Scotland game because no one was stupid enough to buy it. The game has to be just as affordable for the average citizen, for the average man, as it is for those who can afford a 1000 euro ticket. Otherwise the stadiums will not be as full in the long run as they are now.”

Hoeneß said of the European Championship in general: “The Spanish deserved to win, I was a little disappointed by the French. But on the whole I found the European Championship very entertaining. What I liked most in the preliminary round was the offensive football. I didn’t really see a game where a team just sat back. In the end you have to say we saw the final beforehand. Germany against Spain was actually the anticipated final. You have to say that these two teams were the best in the tournament. The Spanish were perhaps a shade better.”

The honorary president of Bayern is very satisfied with the DFB team. He makes it clear: “The development in the German team was phenomenal. The English would say: There’s more to come. We can continue on this path!”

And what does he say about his Bayern and new coach Vincent Kompany (38)?

Hoeneß: “I am very happy with us: Vincent Kompany is a man who comes from football. I once had dinner with him, Max Eberl, Christoph Freund and Herbert Hainer and his core message was: the focus must be on work! And that is something that I really liked. It applies to all of us: it cannot be the case that we want to work less and less and earn more and more money. I can assure you: I don’t need to work any more, but I still work and I say again: I enjoy it.”
