University of Bologna Gears Up for European University Championships: A Day of Pride and Tradition

The day of university pride starts as per tradition from the Sala VIII centenario in via Zamboni 33. The Alma Mater Studiorum a year ago, at this time, won three European university titles, with men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and Betty Vuk in judo. The University of Bologna tries again, relying on the recruiting skills of Cus Bologna.

In the rectorate, to receive the delegations of young university students, there are the deputy rector Simona Tondelli, the delegate for students and for institutional communication Federico Condello, the vice president of Cus Bologna Valeria Taraborrelli and the sports councilor of the Municipality, Roberta Li Calzi.

There are also partners: Gianluca Pavanello CEO of Macron, Stefano Mangherini of Matteiplast and Lorenzo Zitignani of Technogym.

That the link between sport and university is double-edged, thanks also to the Dual Career project, can be understood from the timing of some of the kids. Alberto Conti, who last year was included in the best quintet of the European Championships – and Cus Bologna took home the fourth European in its history –, has just successfully taken an exam in Natural Sciences. Betty Vuk, who is specializing in Criminology, is expected today for an appeal. With Alberto and Betty there are also Giuditta Carlini, two gold medals at the university taekwondo championships, Giulia Galletti, vice captain of the defending champion volleyball team and Elisabetta Tassinari, a strong point in basketball. “We would like to do better than last year”, says Tassinari who remembers last year’s bronze.

“Let’s try to win again,” Alberto Conti blurts out, causing general hilarity at coach Matteo Lolli’s exorcisms.

The European University Championships this season will be held in Miskolc, Hungary. A stage full of memories, because the basketball epic of the Alma Mater with a young Pippo Ricci – he started winning with the Cus jersey, before joining the national team – started right from Miskolc.

From July 11th to 13th it will be the turn of the judo delegation led by Vuk and Daniele Gasparri. The women’s volleyball team will be busy from July 10th to 16th. From July 21st to 24th, instead, there will be space for taekwondo with Giuditta Carlini and Ayoub Sadid. The basketball teams will close the event from July 18th to 24th.

“You are the pride of the city,” says Councilor Li Calzi. “The University will cheer for you as always,” comments Deputy Pro-Rector Tondelli.

While the university world prepares for departure, thanks to the presence of those who, in the past, have guaranteed success and a sense of belonging such as Gherardo Sabatini, Gioacchino Chiappelli, Gabriele Fin, Matteo Galli, Serena Vece, Chiara Boschi and Agostino Briatico.

Pavanello proudly shows off the new jerseys, while everyone is already looking ahead to July 2025: from 6 to 13, the University of Bologna will host the European Basketball Championship.
