VfL Bochum Signs Dutch Midfielder Dani de Wit: Another Transfer Market Coup

VfL Bochum has once again struck on the transfer market and secured the services of Dani de Wit.

The 26-year-old Dani de Wit comes from the Dutch first division club AZ Alkmaar and does not cost VfL Bochum a transfer fee, as his contract in Alkmaar expired on July 1, 2024. The club has already pulled off a similar coup when it signed Ibrahima Sissoko from the French first division club Racing Strasbourg, for whom no money had to flow to Strasbourg either.

On Wednesday evening, the midfielder signed a four-year contract with VfL until June 2028. “Dani has been one of the absolute top performers in Alkmaar in recent years, both in the Eredivisie and in international cup competitions,” VfL sports director Marc Lettau is quoted as saying on the club’s website. “He is a leader who will enrich our offensive game. Dani looks for the goal, is also strong in tackles and is also present in the air.”

Strong attacking midfielder for Bochum

With de Wit, Bochum are getting a strong attacking midfielder who scored ten goals in 32 games in the Eredivisie last season and provided three assists. De Wit was trained at Ajax Amsterdam and has been playing for Alkmaar since the summer of 2019.

Outperformed international competition

Other clubs are said to have been interested in signing de Wit. US Lecce from the Italian Serie A are said to have been vying for de Wit, and there are also said to have been inquiries from clubs in the Premier League. However, VfL has now won the race, although its competitors probably had more financial leeway. However, Bochum made contact with de Wit at an early stage, and he may be particularly interested in moving to the Bundesliga and to a solidly managed club like VfL Bochum.

De Wit, who is Bochum’s fifth external signing for the 2024/25 season, can hardly wait to get started for his new club: “For me, this is the perfect combination: the dedication from the stands and the hard work on the pitch. That’s what I’m here for, that’s what I stand for,” said the 26-year-old. “I’m really looking forward to wearing the VfL jersey. The Bundesliga has always been a dream, one of the top leagues for me. That’s the level at which I want to prove myself in the future.”
