VfL Judo Department Faces Registration Freeze for 22nd International Judo Tournament

Judo. In the end, there was no other option: The VfL Judo department – organizer and organiser of the 22nd International Judo Tournament, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday in the Glass Palace – had to pull the emergency brake and issue a registration freeze. “1900 registrations, 200 more than last year, is the end of it, we cannot cope with more organizationally, so with a heavy heart we have pulled the ripcord and can no longer accept any more registrations,” says Simon Kristen, who is in charge of the organization of what is now Germany’s largest judo event in the VfL Judo department.

What has caused this rush? It is the excellent reputation that this tournament has built up over the last 20 years, and it is the Glaspalast as an almost ideal location for this major sporting event – both of these things have now spread not only in Germany, but also in Europe. This is proven by the list of participating countries: fighters from 20 nations will take to the mat on Saturday and Sunday, including judo athletes from Tunisia, Kyrgyzstan, Ireland and Norway. The VfL judo department is once again shouldering the organization with its own resources, supported by friends and fighters who train in Sindelfingen.

More than 70 helpers – divided into six working groups responsible for infrastructure, catering, referee tables, IT – to name just a few – have been at work for some time and especially this coming weekend. The tournament is not just an economic factor for the Sindelfingen judoka. It strengthens the good reputation of the department and above all it offers judoka from all over southern Germany, Switzerland and Austria a tournament location that is easy to reach. Judoka of all ages from U11 onwards will compete for medals on nine mats. And this time too, the giant trophy for the best club team is at stake. The fights start at 9 a.m. The best club team will be decided on Sunday at around 5 p.m.
