Aldai-Mendizabal, in pairs, and Larrarte, in Cuatro y Medio, lead the revived Plazandreak women’s handball tournament that is played at the La Esperanza fronton in Bilbao. The competition is held every Monday afternoon (7:30 p.m.) with free entry for the public, and the final will be on August 5. On the first day, Dima’s forward and the Guipuzcoan defender beat Arrizabalaga-Capellán (13-22) in a match that was marked by equality until the ninth goal, but which was broken by the inconsistency shown by the Riojan defender in the second half. The pelotaris had a hard time settling into a new court, and in the first part of the contest the errors were the protagonists, especially on the part of the forwards.

The losers started better and had a four-point lead (8-4), but Aldai opted for a wall serve and found what she was looking for. She created doubts in the young Santo Domingo de la Calzada defender and from then on everything was easier for the team dressed in blue. Mendizabal maintained the confidence she had shown until then and Aldai charged the game back, aware of where her rivals’ weak point was. Little by little they began to open up a gap on the scoreboard and had no problems closing out the match with authority after 273 hits.

He moved his rival well

Inside the enclosure, Miren Larrarte imposed her experience (9-18) against the 15-year-old Navarrese Aizane Ibarrola, who pointed out good details. The Bidania native read the match and moved her rival perfectly. Next day Aldai and Mendizabal will play against Zabaleta and Gaminde, and in the ‘cage’ Etxegarai will have Arrillaga as her rival.
