Vineyard Wind 1 becomes the largest operational offshore wind farm in the United States |

Iberdrola, a company led by Ignacio Galán, through its subsidiary in the United States, Avangrid, has started up 10 wind turbines that already generate 136 MW for the grid in the New England region of the United States. The installation already supplies enough clean energy to supply more than 64,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts.

The new renewable facility is now officially the largest operating offshore wind farm in the United States.

“With 10 turbines in operation, Avangrid supplies enough clean energy to power more than 60,000 homes and businesses in Massachusetts,” said Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid. “Our Vineyard Wind 1 project continues to demonstrate the important benefits that offshore wind brings to the New England region, providing good-paying union jobs, local investment and clean energy that is helping Massachusetts meet its growing demand for electricity.”

In February 2024, Vineyard Wind delivered approximately 68 MW to the grid from five turbines. Building on the 136 megawatts currently in operation, additional energy will be delivered to the grid sequentially, with each turbine beginning production once it completes the commissioning process.

Power from the project is interconnected with the New England grid in Barnstable, transmitted by underground cables that connect to a substation further inland on Cape Cod. Once completed, the project will consist of 62 wind turbines.

Vineyard Wind began offshore construction in late 2022, reached steel-in-the-water in June 2023, and completed the nation’s first offshore substation in July 2023. Construction flows through the New Bedford Marine Trade Terminal. In July 2021, Vineyard Wind signed the first labor agreement for an offshore wind project in the United States, providing for the creation of 500 unionized jobs. In December 2023, project shareholders announced that Vineyard Wind 1 had nearly doubled its commitment through the PLA by creating 937 unionized jobs over two years of construction.

The United States is Iberdrola’s main investment focus within its 2024-2026 strategic plan, to which it will allocate 41 billion euros. Specifically, the country will receive 35% of the investment, about 14,350 million euros. Electrical networks will be the main segment of investments, according to the president of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, a few months ago in an interview in the Financial Times.
