Vivianne Miedema Joins Manchester City: Embracing a New Style of Play

Vivianne Miedema says it was City’s attacking style of football that made her want to become a player for the sky blue.

The Barclays Women’s Super League’s all-time leading goalscorer has moved to the Joie Stadium after seven years at Arsenal.

The 27-year-old forward has scored 80 WSL goals for the Gunners and will now look to extend her record as the league’s top scorer in sky blue.

The Dutch international insists it was City’s belief in a beautiful, progressive game that stood out most to her when considering her options this summer.

“Having thought a lot about my future after leaving Arsenal, the main thing that came up was that I wanted to be at a team that plays good football,” she said in her first official interview after joining City.

“I think in women’s football at the moment City have a clear philosophy, obviously they did well last season.”

“If I look at the way I want to play, it really fits. Ultimately, it’s obviously a big bonus that I’m staying in the WSL. I think it was the best fit for me.”

Miedema joins a plethora of exciting attacking options for Gareth Taylor, including WSL Golden Boot winner Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw.

The Jamaican scored 21 goals in last season’s league, with the likes of Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly, Mary Fowler and Miedema’s compatriot Jill Roord also scoring regularly.

Miedema is excited to line up alongside these names and is confident that her skills complement those already at the Club.

“Looking to the future, I’ve always said I want to play with the best players in the world and I think City have achieved that,” she said.

“In terms of attack, they have so many different players, different qualities and hopefully I can add some different qualities to that again.”

“If you look at last season you can see the qualities that Bunny has, Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly obviously play for England as well.”

“Game with Jill [Roord] for many years now, so I’m sure we’ll meet again and the depth of the team is only growing.”

“If we can get the right combination in that sense – thankfully it’s not up to me – it would be amazing to be a part of that.”

“I think we can have a lot of joy in front of the goal.”

While she has already enjoyed such a stellar career, our new No. 6 hopes to reach the pinnacle while plying her trade at Joie Stadium.

“I’m only 27, obviously. I haven’t played as much football as I would have liked in the last couple of years, but I think and hope that my best years are still ahead of me,” he said.

“I really hope that happens here at City.”

“I hope I can help the team as much as I can.”

“I’m really excited to be part of the team and for the girls to help me and get me back to my best.”

“If I get back to my best, we can achieve really great things together.”
