“We will see the degree of competitiveness we have”

MADRID, 21 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The national women’s basketball coach, Miguel Méndez, confessed that the duel against Australia this Monday in Segovia will mark where Spain’s “degree of competitiveness” is less than a week before the debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as part of the last stop in Segovia.

“We are meeting deadlines and using these two games to finish getting ready for the match rhythm and competitive level against two very good teams, with Canada in full force, with Kia Nurse and Carleton. We are trying to quickly introduce Megan into our dynamic, which is always a bit disruptive because they change roles again,” he said in statements provided by the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB).

The Galician coach referred to this new set of pieces and highlighted the Australian rival, with Canada being the last course for Wednesday. “A player who has not been here in the last month is coming in, we have been concentrating for a long time and in three days we are going to change the lives of all of us. Australia, if it is not going to compete for the gold against the United States, I think, is very close, very close physically, with very good players. A rival that I think is above us and I will like it and we will like to play that match to see the degree of competitiveness that we have,” he said.

Méndez was asked about the variety that Megan Gustafson, the latest to join the training camp, brings. “There are many things, many details, many basics that she has to remember. She comes from playing a completely different NBA style, the team has to adapt to that as well. That is the biggest concern in these two games, I insist against very strong rivals,” he said.

“We need to keep the players in the best possible physical condition to tackle what is coming. We are going with the loss of María Conde, who with the loss of Laura Quevedo is also the only big forward we have, the only athletic forward who gives us the strength to be able to change in defense, to help on the rebound. We will look at other types of alternatives,” he added.

On the other hand, Méndez is confident that Spain will be faithful to its fighting style and compete in these two matches to get in shape before the Olympic debut on the 28th against China. “As they always say, we are not the biggest, nor the strongest, nor are we the most talented, but in the end we try to play together, to share everything that happens to us and to help each other in the best way possible,” she said.
