Wesley Sonck Resigns as U19 Coach at Union Belge: Explains Decision via Social Networks

Wesley Sonck has decided to leave his position as U19 coach at Union Belge. The former international explained the reasons for this decision at length via social networks.

Wesley Sonck is a TV analyst for various media, but for a few months now, this has no longer been allowed by the Belgian Union. This is partly why the U19 coach refused the permanent contract offer from the RBFA.

“It is with regret that I inform you that the time has come to announce my departure from the RBFA,” said Sonck. “It has been a remarkable 7.5 years during which I have been driven by passion and respect. The position was compatible with my other footballing missions and was therefore feasible.”

“From the 6 wonderful years spent with Roberto Martinez, I have only positive memories. Under Luke Benstead, a new impetus was given, which is now forcing me to reconsider the situation. I was offered a full-time position, which I was however obliged to decline. Unfortunately, this is becoming less compatible for me with other mandates.”

“We are considering a new 2-year phase, with an evaluation after 1 year, which implies for me a certain uncertainty and less possibility of long-term vision,” he added. “Only in terms of the work schedule, a full-time activity at the Belgian Union would no longer leave me any room to accept other missions.”

“So other assignments such as the Champions League, the Jupiler Pro League or European international matches were forbidden to me. I would have to coach boys and girls ‘when it’s needed’, let me consider that vague… And although remuneration was never my main motivation, no financial adjustment would be made to go from part-time to full-time. In this way, it becomes very one-sided and almost impossible to keep qualified people on board.”

Sonck will therefore move on to the next stage of his career, which remains to be determined. “So it is time for a new chapter where I apply for other opportunities in the world of football. I do not want to conclude without warmly thanking all the people at the federation who believed in me, so thank you all! It has been a pleasant journey.”
