• Stan Wawrinka (ATP 95) is in the second round of Wimbledon after a convincing 6:3, 7:5, 6:4 win against Briton Charles Broom (ATP 248).
• The Swiss player goes through a weak phase in the second set, but fights back strongly.
• In the next round, Wawrinka will face Gaël Monfils (ATP 33).

Stan Wawrinka was 2:5 down in the second set. It seemed only a matter of time before Charles Broom equalized the set. But the Briton showed nerves – and Wawrinka was able to improve again. The Frenchman fended off three set balls on his own serve and one on Broom’s service. And a short time later it was 7:5 for the 39-year-old. After 5 games in a row, he was able to celebrate a 2:0 set lead.

It was the deciding factor, as Broom was never able to recover from this setback. The Grand Slam debutant was unable to keep up in the third set. After just 1 hour 49 minutes, Wawrinka converted his first match point to win 6-4 and secured his place in the second round of Wimbledon.

Starker Start

The Swiss was already the better player in the first set. In just 23 minutes, Wawrinka only needed one break to win the set 6:3. He didn’t allow a single break opportunity himself, thus showing early on who was the boss on the court.

After the match, Wawrinka was satisfied, saying it had not been an easy match. “I’m happy to have made it through,” he explained. “I like playing on grass. Even if it is a bit more difficult for my game.”

A Frenchman is waiting

In the next round, Wawrinka will face a Frenchman. Gaël Monfils (ATP 33) defeated his compatriot Adrian Mannarino (ATP 24) in four sets. It will be a match between players with a lot of experience: Wawrinka is 39 years old, Monfils is also 37 years old.
