Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz remains undefeated after a successful second round appearance at Wimbledon. The Spanish world number three beat Australian Aleksandar Vukic 7:6 (7/5) 6:2 6:2 and thus moves into the third round. There, Alcaraz will face American Frances Tiafoe.

In the previous only encounter with Vukic, the Spaniard had come up short. However, the duel took place in the 2020 French Open qualification under very different circumstances. The then 17-year-old was still number 193 in the world, but he is now a three-time Grand Slam tournament winner. The 21-year-old recently won the French Open in the final against the German Olympic champion Alexander Zverev.
The number two seed from the USA, Coco Gauff, also reached the third round. The 20-year-old won her second round match against the Romanian Anca Todoni on Wednesday with 6:2 6:1. Gauff converted her first match point after 1:07 hours of play. In the next round, Gauff will face Sonay Kartal (GBR), who beat Clara Burel (FRA) 6:3 5:7 6:3.

Special place for Gauff
“This is the court I played on for the first time here at Wimbledon. Court one is always a special place for me to play,” said Gauff after her victory. Last year’s US Open winner caused a stir at Wimbledon five years ago when she stormed into the round of 16 as a 15-year-old. However, Gauff has never reached the quarterfinals at the third Grand Slam tournament of the year.
British crowd favorite Emma Raducanu has made it to the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since her sensational US Open victory. The 21-year-old 2021 New York winner defeated Belgian Elise Mertens 6-1 6-2. Raducanu is also in the spotlight at Wimbledon because she will compete in the mixed doubles competition alongside Scotsman Andy Murray shortly before his likely retirement. Last year, Raducanu had to take months off due to injury.
On the other hand, former world number one Naomi Osaka was eliminated. The Japanese lost to American Emma Navarro 4:6 1:6.
