Wimbledon: Djokovic on Velvet. Bene Zverev, eliminated Rublev and Vondrousova

No problem for Novak Djokovicwho easily beat Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, in his return match Wimbledon after the 2023 final lost to Carlos Alcaraz. 3-0 even per Zverev (6-2, 6-4, 6-2 on Baena) and From Minaur (7-6(1), 7-6(3), 7-6(4) su Duckworth). Forward Hurkacz (5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 against Albot), out Rublev (6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(5) against Comesana). Among the women, Maneiro eliminates defending champion Vondrousova (6-4, 6-2).

Absolute dominator for four consecutive editions from 2018 to 2022 (in 2020 it was not played due to Covid-19),
Novak Djokovic returns to Wimbledon with the desire to erase defeat suffered last year in the final against
Carlos Alcarazbut also with some doubts about their physical condition:
It’s been only 27 days since his right meniscus surgery (necessary after retiring from Roland Garros). The number 2 of the ATP circuit still manages to open his tournament with a convincing performance, beating Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Thanks to a great performance on serve:
The Serbian breaks his opponent’s serve twice in the first set and closes with a comfortable 6-1. Djokovic shows that he feels good and confirms it in the second match: Nole sees two break points cancelled, but then breaks Kopriva’s serve twice.
Aggression in batting pays off and it is perfectly understood when the Serbian wins two games leaving his opponent at love: Djokovic closes 6-2, at the second set point. The third partial is also the last: the seven-time winner of Wimbledon
accelerates when needed and finds the escape at the decisive moment. Nole steals the serve in the fifth game and then does it again in the seventh, thus putting an end to the match with the service game: the Serbian closes 6-2, with his tenth personal ace.

Hubert Hurkacz also wins his match of the daywho beats 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4
Radu Albotin one of the many matches that today were temporarily interrupted by bad weather. After losing the first set, in which he suffered a decisive break point in the eleventh game,
Polish equalises in secondbreaking serve with set point at 6-4.
The third match immediately sees a break and a counterbreakwith Hurkacz subsequently managing to take the Moldovan’s serve once again in the eighth game, then going on to finalize the set. The last challenge was also quite hard-fought:
Polish player breaks point for 3-2 and decisive runclosing on the first match point.

Alex De Minaur’s afternoon was more complicated: they served him more than
three hours and eight minutes of racing to get the better of an excellent
James Duckworth. 7-6(1), 7-6(3), 7-6(4) was the final result of this very heated derby between Australians: all three sets were very balanced and were decided in a tie-break.
De Minaur managed to break his opponent’s serve at the decisive momentsholding up better under pressure in the tie-breaks. Duckworth still leaves with his head held high, aware of having repeatedly put his compatriot in difficulty, in a tight match.

Convince Alexander Zverevwhich won with a clear 3-0 over
Roberto Carballes Baena: 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 the final result. The first set remains balanced until the fifth game, when the German converts the first break point (after having cancelled three of his opponent’s in the first game) and runs away:
Zverev in fact wins three gamesbreaking another serve from Baena and leaving him at love twice. The Spaniard then suffers a break point in the fifth game of the second set, but
manages to cancel two set points from the Germanbefore giving in. Zverev then closed out the discussion in the third set: he stole Beane’s serve in the first and seventh games and the match was sealed on the first match point, after canceling a break point.

Andrej Rublev’s defeat by Francisco Comesana makes a splash 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(5). The match lasted almost three hours, with the Russian losing the first set after losing his serve in the fifth game and canceling three set points.
Rublev recovers in the second challengefinding two decisive break points (especially the one at 7-5). The total score therefore returns to parity,
but the Russian suddenly goes out: Comesana steals his serve twice and easily wins the third set with a wide 6-2.
The fourth match is the most fought and goes to a tie-break.where the Argentine scores two break points, surprisingly eliminating the number 6 of the ATP circuit.

Also news of the day is the withdrawal from competing in the men’s singles draw by Andy Murraywho was supposed to take to the court today against Tomas Machac: the former world number 1 has decided to concentrate all his efforts on doubles (two weeks ago he had to have a spinal cyst removed). The Scotsman will play his last Wimbledon together with his brother Jamie, having obtained a wild card.

WOMEN’S SCOREBOARD

The big surprise of the day is the elimination in the first round of Marketa Vondrousovareigning winner of the women’s tournament. Jessica Bouzas
Cool beats the Czech tennis player in one hour and nine minutes, with the result of 6-4, 6-2. Vondrousova immediately loses her serve in the first game of the first set, only to then manage to find the break point for 2-2.
The Spanish player, however, plays a better backhand and in the seventh game she steals the Czech’s serve again.then going on to close 6-4. The second match is a small ordeal for the current number 6 of the WTA circuit:
Vondrousova loses serve again in first gamebut manages to find a counterbreak in the second, only to then sink. Maneiro wins two consecutive games without leaving a single point to the Czech and then creates another break point for 5-2, then closing the match with the first match point in the following game.
For the Iberian it is the first success against a Top 10while Vondrousova becomes the second reigning Wimbledon champion to lose in the first round the following edition (Steffi Graf had already done so in 1994).

Jessica Pegula’s clear victory in the US derby against Ashlyn Krueger: 6-2, 6-0 the final result for the tennis player from Buffalo, in just fifty minutes. Pegula opens the first set with a clear 4-0, breaking her opponent’s serve twice and taking an advantage that then leads her without too much effort to the final 6-2.
The second match is a solo performance by the current world number 5: Pegula creates three break points and seals the match with a perfect final game, in which she leaves her compatriot with zero points.

Comfortable 2-0 also for Elena Rybakina on Gabriela Ruse: 6-3, 6-1 the score. The first to find a break point in the first game is the Romanian tennis player, who stays ahead until 3-2. Then the Kazakh takes the stage, managing to break serve twice and win the first set with a three-game margin. The second match tells little:
Rybakina converts three break points, conceding only one game to Ruse and closing the match on the second match point.
