Winning 3-0, Oranje to Euro 2024 Quarterfinals

The Netherlands advanced to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 after eliminating Romania 3-0 in the round of 16. Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen were the stars of the Oranje’s victory in this match.

Playing in Munich on Tuesday (2/7), Gakpo opened the scoring in the first half with a goal in the 20th minute. The Liverpool forward then designed the second goal scored by Donyell Malen in the 83rd minute.

Late in the game, Malen added another goal on the counter-attack, sealing a three-goal lead. Ronald Koeman’s side will now await the winner of Austria vs Turkey to find out who they will face in the last eight.

The course of the match

The Netherlands had the first chance through a long-range shot from Xavi Simons in the 6th minute, but his shot was saved by Romanian goalkeeper Florin Nita.

Romania threatened again in the 14th minute, but Dennis Man’s long-range shot was off target. The Netherlands had a chance four minutes later from a corner, but Nathan Ake’s header went wide of the right-hand post.

The Netherlands took the lead in the 20th minute. Cody Gakpo cut inside from the left after receiving a pass from Simons, then unleashed a shot that flew into the left corner of the Romanian goal although it hit Nita’s hand.

Romania tried to hit back, but Ianis Hagi’s shot from outside the box in the 21st minute went wide of the left side, while Man’s close-range shot three minutes later went wide of the Dutch goal.

Stefan de Vrij had a chance to extend the Netherlands’ lead in the 26th minute, but his header from a corner went wide. Romania’s chance through Denis Dragus’ shot in injury time was saved by Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

In the second half, the Netherlands almost increased their lead in the 58th minute, but Virgil van Dijk’s header hit the post. In the 62nd minute, Gakpo’s long-range shot was saved by Nita.

Gakpo again broke through Romania’s goal in the 63rd minute, but was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee for offside. A good chance was obtained by Joey Veerman who was one-on-one with Nita in the 73rd minute, but his shot went just wide on the right side.

The second goal was finally scored by the Netherlands in the 83rd minute. Gakpo stabbed from the left side then sent a pass to Donyell Malen to finish it into a goal with a low shot. The score of 2-0 lasted until the end.

Malen scored his second in injury time from a counter-attack set up by Simons to make it 3-0 for the Netherlands, which they held until the end.
