XXVII Samuel Ferrer Memorial Badminton: A Day of Competition and Community Support

For practically the entire day on Saturday, June 29, 2024, the Samuel Ferrer Badminton Memorial was held at the Samuel Ferrer Municipal Pavilion in Cuenca, reaching its twenty-seventh edition.

The XXVII Samuel Ferrer Memorial Badminton was held in the individual category, both male and female, and in the categories Under 11 (mini badminton), Under 13, Under 15, as well as Absolute non-federated and Absolute federated, starting at 9:00 am, ending with the trophy presentation and the subsequent raffle of gifts around 7:00 pm, with a total of 152 matches being played, 142 of them badminton and another 10 mini badminton.

It is worth highlighting the great participation of different players, both men and women, in each of the categories contested, which on this occasion was a total of 87 registered, with some last-minute withdrawals and a real participation of 84 flyers, with participants from different locations such as Toledo, Albacete, Madrid and Valencia, also counting, of course, with participants from Cuenca capital and from towns in the province such as Cañete, Las Pedroñeras and El Provencio.

The trophy presentation and subsequent raffle of gifts were attended by Charo Rodríguez, Councillor for Sports of the Cuenca City Council, María Carmen Checa and María Carmen Gómez, on behalf of the AAVV of the Casablanca District, as well as the siblings of the late Samuel, José María and Marisol Ferrer.

In the U11 Women’s category, first place was decided ex aequo.

U11 MALE CATEGORY (4 participants):

1st.- Pedro Casamayor (Provenfray Badminton)

2nd.- Alvaro Soriano (Albatros Schools)

3rd.- Aidan Casanova (Badminton Provenfray)

4th.- Roberto Nicolás Moldoveanu (Albatros Schools)

In the Under 11 Boys’ category, first place was decided by the difference in sets won in direct matches, as there was a three-way tie in matches won.

U13 FEMALE CATEGORY (9 participants):

The Albatros Badminton Sports Club would like to thank the various entities that continue to support sport in general and the practice of badminton in particular in the province of Cuenca, such as the Globalcaja Cuenca Foundation, the Cuenca City Council, the Cuenca Provincial Council and the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha, through its Sports Service in Cuenca, as well as other entities and companies that are always there when they are needed, such as the Casablanca Neighbourhood Association, the University of Castilla-La Mancha and the Castilla-La Mancha Badminton Federation. Finally, we would like to thank all the participants for their contribution of non-perishable food as a registration “fee”, totalling 280 kilos, which were delivered to the Cuenca Food Bank.
