Yao Jie: A Trailblazing Chinese-Dutch Badminton Champion

Yao Jie (Hu Be village near Wuhan, April 10, 1977) is a Chinese-born and Dutch naturalized badminton player. She became European singles champion in 2002 and Dutch singles champion in 2002-2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010. In 2009 she also won the doubles title together with Lotte Bruil-Jonathans.

Yao Jie won the women’s singles at the Dutch Open in 2003, 2008 and 2009, reached the final in 2004, 2005 and 2010 and withdrew from the quarterfinals in 2007 with a knee injury. In both 2004 and 2006 she won bronze at the European Championships.

The Chinese-Dutch woman competed for the Netherlands at the 2004 Summer Olympics, where she lost in the second round. She missed qualifying for the 2008 Olympic tournament due to an injury, after which the NOC*NSF did not award her a place. At the end of April 2012, she did qualify for the Games that will be held in London later that year.

Yao Jie played for Horsens Badminton Klub (Den) in the 2008/2009 season and for BC Amersfoort in the 2009/2010/2011 seasons.

Yao Jie married badminton player Eric Pang in January 2009, who became Dutch men’s champion for the first time in 2009. The two were teammates at BC Amersfoort. They live in Arnhem.
