Young Madrid Tennis Sensation Dani Mérida Reaches Final of Copa del Rey de Tenis After Upsetting Dominic Thiem

The 19-year-old tennis player from Madrid, Dani Mérida, will play this Friday in the final of the 19th Copa del Rey de Tenis, which is being played at the facilities of the Real Club Recreativo de Tenis de Huelva, after defeating the Austrian Dominic Thiem, former world number three and champion of the 2020 US Open, 6-3 and 6-4 in one hour and 26 minutes of play.

On an afternoon in which the intense heat experienced in the province of Huelva throughout the day gave the players a break, the first set was resolved with a 6-3 in 43 minutes. The second seemed to be heading for an easy resolution for the Madrid native, who was 4-1 in his favour, but Dominic Thiem, who will retire at the end of the season, showed glimpses of his quality and balanced the scales (4-4).

Dani Mérida won the ninth game and, with his serve, he has overcome two points of disadvantage to go 30-30 and force a ‘deuce’ that he resolved thanks to his serve and the power of his shots from the back of the court. Mérida will face this Friday the winner of the second semifinal between the Italian Fabio Foggnigni and the Valencian Pedro Martínez. On the same day, the direct women’s final will also be played between the Russian Elina Avanesyan and the Polish Magda Linette.
