Zverev Shines at Wimbledon After French Open Defeat

About three weeks after his defeat in the final at the French Open, Olympic champion Zverev won the highlight in London with 6:2, 6:4, 6:2 against Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena.

“I’m happy with how I started the tournament. I’ve had my problems over the years. But I feel different this year,” said Zverev: “I’ve decided that I love grass courts.”

After Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Altmaier, the Hamburg native is the third German professional to reach the second round this year. There, the fourth-ranked player in the world rankings will face the American Marcos Giron.

Zverev has big ambitions this year for the tennis classic, which is clearly his weakest Grand Slam tournament to date. The 27-year-old reached the round of 16 twice, and at the other three majors he was at least in the semifinals. “This is the most open Wimbledon tournament we’ve had in 20 years,” he said before the first serve. “It’s the first time that I really feel like I’m a contender here, maybe I can win the title.”

Michael Stich, the last German winner at Church Road in 1991, also has high hopes for Zverev. “I think the minimum goal is certainly the semi-finals,” said Stich in an interview with the news portal t-online.
