Zverev’s Knee Test and Quarter-Final Pairings Set at Hamburg Open

Status: 18.07.2024 17:12

Three of the four quarter-final pairings at the tennis tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum have been decided. The second-to-last seed, Holger Rune from Denmark, qualified on Thursday. In the evening, local hero Alexander Zverev wants to complete the round of the last eight.

Rune, one of three top 20 players competing in this year’s traditional tournament, beat Argentinian Marco Trungeletti 6:4, 6:3 in the round of 16. The 20-year-old, who was once coached by Boris Becker, only had trouble with the Argentinian clay court player in the first set, before clearly dominating him in the second set.

This means that three of the four quarter-final pairings have been decided. Rune will face Frenchman Arthur Fils on Friday, and there will also be duels between Luciano Darderi (Italy) and Sebastian Baez (Argentina) and Francisco Cerúndolo (Argentina) and Pedro Martínez (Spain).

Match against Gaston a tough test for Zverev’s knee

At 6:30 p.m., top seed Zverev will return to the center court and fight against Frenchman Hugo Gaston for a place in the quarterfinals, where Chinese player Zhizhen Zhang would be waiting. In contrast to the first-round duel with Dutchman Jesper de Jong (6:2, 6:2), Gaston, who likes to play with changes of pace and drop shots, is a real test for Germany’s number one.

Zverev sustained the knee injury in Wimbledon against Briton Cameron Norrie. The gold medalist from Tokyo spoke of a “small fracture” in his knee after his first appearance in Hamburg. But it could only get worse if he overstretched his leg again.

At the home game at the Hamburg Open (until July 21), Zverev wants to gain confidence for the highlight of the year before the Olympic Games – without causing further damage to his body. “There is just under a week between Hamburg and Paris. I will do everything I can to be successful at both tournaments,” said the 27-year-old.
