An Se-young’s Olympic Triumph Sparks Controversy: Badminton Star Accuses Korean Association of Mismanagement, Government Launches Investigation

An Se-young, a South Korean player who just won the Olympic badminton women’s singles championship, blasted the Korean Badminton Association for its poor management and unreasonable training methods, which caused an uproar. The South Korean government has intervened to investigate the matter, and the incident has also attracted the attention of South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol.

The Hankook Ilbo reported that in response to An Se-young’s recent remarks, the presidential office issued a statement on Tuesday (6th) saying that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea will investigate the truth after the Olympics and said that Yoon Seok-yeol has been informed of the situation.

“As the Paris Olympics are ongoing, we will investigate the situation as soon as possible after the games to reveal the truth,” the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said in a statement. “Based on the results of the investigation, we will review whether appropriate measures are needed to promote changes.”

An Se-young reportedly refused to attend the award press conference

It was reported that when the Korean Sports Association held a press conference for the 2024 Paris Olympics badminton medalists in Paris on Tuesday, 22-year-old An Se-young refused to attend the press conference, when all the questions at the press conference were about her.

South Korea’s mixed doubles silver medalists Kim Won-ho and Jung Na-eun were asked by the media about An Se-young rather than their victory.

In response, Kim Won-ho said, “Because the events are different, we did not pay attention to the issues mentioned by An Se-young. There are too many reports on this topic, so we can’t say that the atmosphere in the badminton team is good.”

Han Badminton Association refutes An Se-young’s accusations

According to Korean newspaper JoongAng Daily, the Badminton Korea Association (BKA) refuted An Se-young’s claim yesterday (7th) that the national team did not take her injury seriously, saying that An Se-young voluntarily underwent rehabilitation training within the team.

In a statement, the Badminton Association of Korea said it arranged a personal trainer for An in February at a cost of more than 11 million won (S$15.96), and sent a traditional Korean medicine doctor to treat her after she was injured when she arrived in Paris.

In response to An Se-young’s criticism of the Badminton Association of Korea’s monopoly on Korean badminton, the association pointed out that athletes can participate in international competitions after leaving the association, provided that they have served in the association for at least five years. The conditions are that female athletes must be at least 27 years old and male athletes must be at least 28 years old. An Se-young is only 22 years old this year.

The association also said it will soon hold a dialogue with An Se-young, analyze the issues she raised, and try to take more measures to protect her.

Korean Olympic Committee asks coaches to submit report

Separately, South Korean Olympic Committee President Lee Ki-heung said Tuesday he had asked five coaches to submit reports on the situation, Yonhap News Agency reported.

Li Qixing said that he understood An Xiying’s complaints, but would not easily lean towards one side.

He said: “I don’t know what specific dissatisfaction she has with the Badminton Association, and the basis of her accusation is not clear.”

“Once we return home, the Korean Olympic Committee will conduct an in-depth investigation into this matter.”
