Balancing Legacy and Motivation: Yevgeny Kafelnikov Reflects on Djokovic’s Post-Olympic Challenge

Yevgeny Kafelnikov can imagine that Novak Djokovic after his gold medal in Paris, he fell into a motivational hole. The 2000 Olympic champion said this in an interview.

Statistically speaking, Djokovic has achieved more than Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. You don’t need a degree in mathematics to realize this. But who is called the GOAT despite the mundane mathematics is something that tennis fans will probably still be arguing about in 100 years. The former world number one and gold medalist at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, says Djokovic is “definitely” in the top 3 best athletes of all time.

What can happen now for the “Djoker”?

Athletes, mind you, not “just” tennis players. Therefore, his opinion in the debate is not surprising: “There is no question that Novak is the greatest tennis player of all time, that’s for sure. Whether you can put him on a par with Michael Jordan… I don’t know, because I grew up with the greatest athlete of all time, Michael Jordan – I just wanted to see him play live. For me, he is always number one, but Novak is definitely one of the three greatest athletes of all time, without a doubt – all the successes, records he has broken, titles he has won…” said Kafelnikov in an interview with “Tennis Majors”.

But the Russian also believes that the time after the Olympics could be tough for Djokovic. Now that Djokovic has achieved everything: “Novak has stayed motivated because he wanted to win the gold medal. At the moment it will be hard to find the motivation. He doesn’t have to prove to anyone that he is better than Federer and Nadal, that’s for sure. What’s next? I have no idea. If he wants to keep playing for the pure joy of the game, that’s only fair and nobody will criticize him for that. Again, he has achieved everything, I don’t know how he can find the motivation to go even further than he already has. That’s how I see it,” explained Kafelnikov.

But if he can prove again and again that he has almost inhuman motivation, then it’s Novak Djokovic.
