Bolingoli’s Potential Return Sparks Competition Ahead of Mechelen Clash

Ivan Leko is not yet completely certain, but he thinks he can count on Boli Bolingoli for the reception of Mechelen, this Friday. It remains to be seen, however, whether the left-back will dislodge Henry Lawrence, author of a fine start to the season.

Second consecutive home game for Standard, who will host Mechelen this Friday evening. In a press conference, Ivan Leko gave news of his squad and announced a probable return to the group: that of Boli Bolingoli, who came off injured against Norwich in preparation.

“It’s almost the same as last week. Bolingoli is back, he did some training with us. He might be part of the selection. It’s good news, because he’s an important player, for his profile and his experience.”

“It will be a special match for him, because he comes from Mechelen. It’s also a good thing because it brings competition in training and it’s one more player on the list.”

Towards a Bolingoli comeback, Sahabo played with the SL16

No Hakim Sahabo yet, however. The midfielder is also on the way back, even if he will need a little more time.

“Sahabo missed a few weeks of training, three or four. He did a few sessions, he played 45 minutes with SL16 this Wednesday to get back into the rhythm. He will have to work hard to come back well, because the others now have an advantage. It’s normal, in his case.”

Announced on the bench by the Croatian T1 last week, Grejohn Kyei was finally a starter against Club Brugge. Not a great match from the French striker, who also needs a few more weeks before reaching his best level.

“Grejohn is not yet 100% physically, he had also missed a few weeks of training. His short preparation was not enough. He is an interesting profile, with a lot of quality. He can become a very important piece, but he needs time.”
