Businessmen request government intervention to lift the blockade on the Mexico-Puebla highway – El Sol de México

The blockade on the Mexico-Puebla highway, which has lasted more than 30 hours, has had a significant impact on the economy and the transportation of people and goods, business representatives said.

The Confederation of Industrial Chambers of the United Mexican States (Concamin) warned that it is essential to find a solution to avoid further damage, since the highway is a fundamental axis for the country.

“We strongly call on the Federal Government authorities to engage in constructive dialogue with the dissident groups that are blocking the highway (…) it is a hub for the transportation of people and goods, and its prolonged blockage causes significant economic and social damage,” the agency said.

The blockade carried out by the ejidatarios of Santa Rita Tlahuapan is due to the fact that the protesters are demanding from the Federal Government the pending payments for the lands that were expropriated for the construction of the highway. They warned that they will not lift the blockade until they have a response.

Odracir Barequera, general director of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA), told El Sol de México that these blockages affect transportation in the industry, causing delays in transportation of more than three hours.

“We have not calculated the economic impact yet, however, several brands are already facing problems with transportation, and although alternative routes are being used, there is a delay of at least three hours in transportation,” he said.

The National Chamber of Cargo Transportation (Canacar) said that the blockade threatens the mobility and free transit of millions of people who travel daily on these roads that connect the Valley of Mexico with the south and north of the country.

“The operation of the Mexico-Puebla highway and the Arco Norte stimulates and sustains Mexico’s economy, since goods and merchandise are transported for industries and daily food,” he said.

Concamin was sensitive to the protesters’ demands, but appealed to their understanding in order to end the blockade, so that the supply chain and economic activity would not be affected.
