A send-off party was held for Judo athlete Yujiro Seto, who will represent Japan at the Paris Paralympics

On Sunday, August 4, 2024, a send-off party was held in Fukuoka City for Yujiro Seto, who was selected as a judo representative for the Paris Paralympics, a competition for visually impaired athletes. Seto won a bronze medal in the men’s 66 kg class at the previous Tokyo Paralympics, when he was a fourth-year student. After graduating from our university, he went on to graduate school at the University of Tsukuba and is currently active as a top athlete affiliated with Kyusei Beverage Industry in his hometown of Itoshima City. Since several weight classes were integrated after the Tokyo Games, Seto will move up a weight class at the Paris Paralympics to compete in the men’s 73 kg class, a class for athletes with mild visual impairments.

The send-off party was organized by Kyusei Inryo Kogyo Co., Ltd., the company Seto belongs to, as well as members of the judo clubs at his alma mater, Fukuoka Prefectural Shuyukan High School, and Fukuoka University of Teacher Education, and was attended by approximately 120 people who came to offer words of encouragement to Seto.

Representatives from our university included President Iida, Professor Noriko Narasaki of the Health and Physical Education Research Unit, who has coached Seto as the head of the Judo club, and Associate Professor Han Seongmin of the Special Needs Education Research Unit, who was Seto’s graduation thesis supervisor, and they all offered words of encouragement to Seto.

The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games will be held over 12 days from August 28 to September 8, 2024. We look forward to seeing Seto’s great performance.
