Castelnaudary has a multitude of sports associations, which will be present at the associations forum on September 7. It notably has a baseball and softball association, a derivative of the legendary American sport.
Have you ever heard of softball? This team sport is a derivative of the legendary American baseball. “Softball is played with a ball that is a third bigger, with a bat that is a third lighter, on a field that is a third smaller. It is also a different way of throwing. The game is therefore faster, requires less power and a lot more reflexes”, explains Julien Merlhe, the president of the Chaurienne baseball and softball association. He discovered baseball during a school trip to the United States. “In the 2000s, I learned that you could learn baseball in my hometown, Montauban. It was at the end of high school and, since then, I haven’t stopped”, he says.
Founded last year, his association was named Black Sheep Castelnaudary. “We decided to make softball the club’s main discipline. It’s more conducive to playing in mixed teams, between adults. Our goal is to have a club geared towards diversity,” explains Julien Merlhe.
A shared passion
With his partner, Charline Ladarré, he shares his passion with both children and adults. As for the little ones, they climbed to third place in the Occitanie championship. “It’s incredible to see them play. In September, they didn’t know this sport and, in June, they knew all the technical moves. It’s nice to see their progress,” smiles the coach.
As for softball instruction for adults, there is no competition on the program. Only recreational practice. “We have fun on Sundays among ourselves. We have participated in friendly tournaments as part of the Winter Series,” explains Julien Merlhe. He will be present at the Castelnaudary associations forum, which will be held on September 7.
Training for children: Saturday morning. Training for adults: Sunday morning. At the Millénaire Complex. Sportswear and a baseball glove are required, the rest of the equipment will be provided by the association.
