Gold Medal Glory: Ahn Se-young’s Victory Unmasks Controversial Practices of Korea Badminton Association

(Seoul = News 1) Reporter Sobom Lee = As Ahn Se-young (22, Samsung Life Insurance) criticized the Korea Badminton Association immediately after winning the women’s singles badminton title at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the fact that the association intervened in the national team selection six years ago and spent lavishly on executive travel expenses is being reexamined.

An Se-young won the gold medal by defeating China’s He Bingzhao 2-0 (21-13 21-16) in the women’s singles final of the badminton held at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena in Paris, France on the 5th (Korean time).

After the awards ceremony, Ahn Se-young appeared in the mixed zone and confessed, “My knee injury was more serious than I thought. It wasn’t something that could be easily cured.” She continued, “I was very disappointed that the association was too complacent. I think it will be difficult for me to continue playing for the national team now.”

He then criticized, “The association is blocking everything (of the players). In some ways, they are neglecting them in the name of freedom. It seems like Korean badminton can develop further, but it seems like it is time to look back and see why there was only one gold medal this time.”

Afterwards, articles reporting the association’s past misdeeds were posted in various online communities and social media.

According to a SBS report in November 2018, the association’s executives, including the chairman, intervened in the selection of national team members ahead of the Jakarta Asian Games.

At the time, the entry was revised three times, which was unusual, as it was instructed by the association’s executives to change generations in consideration of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

As a result, six out of 20 players were replaced, reducing the number of players with experience in comprehensive competitions to just two, and in doubles, partners were changed in four groups, excluding two groups.

The national team, whose power had fallen significantly, ended up not winning a medal for the first time in the Asian Games. As soon as the competition ended, the association shifted responsibility for the poor performance to the manager and coaches and notified them of their dismissal via text message.

In addition, it was discovered that the association executives were very stingy in supporting the players.

According to the budget prepared by the Badminton Association for the World Championships held in China in July 2018, six players participated, but eight officials followed them. In addition, the coaches and players flew economy class, while all the officials flew business class, which cost nearly twice as much.

In May 2017, during the Australian tournament, five executives traveled in business class at a cost of over 16 million won, but returned home early after the quarterfinals, saying, “It will be difficult to win given our current strength.”

Only the coaches and players remained, and after playing the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, they reached the top after 14 years. None of the executives saw this scene. The executives spent a lot of money on travel expenses, but the support for the players was poor.
