Historic Achievement: Alejandra Valencia Trujillo Becomes First Sonoran to Win Two Olympic Medals in Archery

Pride for Mexico, for Sonora and for Unison, Alejandra Valencia Trujillo became the first Sonoran to win two Olympic medals; in Paris 2024, she won the bronze medal in the Women’s Recurve Archery Team.

The archer is a graduate of the Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design from this university. Miguel Ángel Flores Castañeda, coach of the Mexican women’s team, has been the guide of the representative Archery team. Both are owls and are an example for a new generation of archers.

Example to follow

For Mía Victoria Gudiño Symonds, a student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, who teaches the discipline and is part of the representative group of this university, what Valencia Trujillo has achieved is an incentive.

“It is very exciting to see it, to know that a Sonoran achieved something very important, which is history,” said the goalkeeper.

Karla Gálvez Olivares is the coach of the representative team; like many Sonorans and Mexicans, she celebrates the triumph of the goalkeeper from this state, and the achievement of her coach Miguel Ángel, with whom she is married and has three children.

“It is a motivation for many children who have been working for many years; and now with new students, new children, young people who come, adults too, because this is a sport that has no age limit,” he said.

Gálvez Olivares began practicing archery at the age of 8, and retired at the age of 20. She was the first girl from Sonora to win a medal in a national Olympiad in this sport. Today, she is the mentor of the Owl archers and has decided to compete again.

Invites you to come to the countryside

With the return of activities to the Hermosillo campus and the excitement over the participation and results of the Olympic archer in Paris 2024, he assured that they are prepared to receive children from 6 years of age who want to practice this sport, they can come every afternoon to the shooting range located on the corner of Reforma and Colosio streets, just behind the Miguel Castro Servín Stadium.

“Now that they see us here, that the Unison shooting range is more visible, the same students, teachers, and parents who want their children to shoot come and ask us, and now that we are back from vacation, many children are going to arrive,” shared the coach.

For those who arrive for the first time, he said, they initially provide them with equipment, and once they decide to stay, they buy protectors, arrows and a bow.

Regarding the representative archery team, he commented that it is made up of archers with years of experience, but they have also received university students who, after less than a year, are already participating in state competitions.
