The final, in which Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic met for the first time in a Grand Slam final, ended with a victory for Nadal. He won 6:4, 5:7, 6:4, 6:2 and thus secured his first US Open title in 2010. The jersey from this match has now been acquired by collector Rob Gough. Gough bought the Spaniard’s shirt for 72,000 dollars. This is the most money ever paid for a tennis player’s shirt.

Just a very short record?

Gough and his fellow collectors are betting that the market for used sporting goods is still underestimated and will increase in value significantly in the near future. “Acquiring this jersey from Rafael Nadal that he wore during his 2010 US Open victory is like owning a piece of sporting history,” Gough said of his business idea.

There may soon be more opportunities for Nadal fans and collectors: other shirts by the Spaniard are currently being offered for sale. The highest price for a shirt is currently just over 40,000 dollars.

And with the many titles that Nadal has won in his career, there are sure to be more to come…
