Judo at the Paris 2024 Olympics: Mastering Ippon and Spain’s Path to Victory

Judo, a martial art of Japanese origin, has been part of the total list of sports practiced at the Olympic Games as a permanent sport since the Munich Olympics in 1972.

Since then, judo has become established in the Olympic Games, combining its women’s discipline as well as the mixed modality. Although not much is known about this martial art, anyone can deduce that the ultimate goal in this discipline is to knock down the opponent using different techniques within rules that are much more complex than this sport may seem.

Beyond hand-to-hand combat, there are various techniques for knocking down an opponent, which are highly praised by judo fans and only two of which can be used at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games: ippon and waza-ari. Of the two, ippon is the technique that offers the direct path to victory.

How to perform ippon

As stated in the Judo rules for the 2024 Paris OlympicsIppon scoring is awarded when the judoka knocks down his opponent from behind with force, speed and control.

Similarly, ippon can be obtained by submission or by immobilization on the ground. The key is to maintain the movement and submission of the opponent for a minimum of 20 seconds at a time.

In this way, if the judoka manages to sustain the movement for the necessary time in a clean, correct manner and with the necessary control and speed, he automatically obtains 10 points and the referee immediately awards him the position of winner of the fight.

But how can you achieve an ippon? This is what Spanish judoka Tristani ‘Tato’ Mosakhlishvili did during his fight against Kyrgyz Erlan Sherov, which gave him a place in the semi-finals.
