Malachi Flynn Signs One-Year Deal with Spurs: A Chance to Prove His Worth This Preseason

Malachi Flynn will be a Spurs player next season, according to Shams Charania, a journalist from The Athleticor at least he will have the opportunity to fight to be one. The point guard has signed a one-year agreement with the Texas franchise that, according to Andrew Lopez, a journalist from ESPNit’s not guaranteed, so this is probably a way to count on him for the preseason and analyze there if they want to count on him for the entire year.

Flynn is coming off three stints in the 23-24 season, starting with Toronto, being traded to New York alongside OG Anunoby in late December, and being sent to Detroit in February as part of the move that brought Bojan Bogdanovic to the Big Apple. With those three jerseys, he averaged a total of 5.5 points and 2.4 assists per game, although the opportunities he had to shine for each of the franchises were different given the different aspirations of each.

It was with the Pistons where he had the most opportunities to shine, and he certainly took advantage of it to make himself known by scoring 50 points against the Atlanta Hawks in one of the most memorable performances of the season precisely because of how unexpected it was. This should not be confused, obviously, with his real level, but it does reflect that he is a player with offensive capabilities who can provide scoring opportunities for the second unit he is part of.

For the Spurs, the roster already has two point guards in Chris Paul and Tre Jones, so Flynn would bring a somewhat less traditional profile to the position. However, given that the team’s roster is currently comprised of 17 players, at least two of them will have to leave before the season starts. Will Flynn be one of those chosen?
