Mariano Navone Exits Montreal Masters 1000 After Defeat to Taylor Fritz

The Buenos Aires native, number 36 in the world, lost to American Fritz 6-4 and 6-1 and was unable to advance in the Canadian tournament.

Fritz’s last point against Navone

Argentine Mariano Navone failed to advance on Wednesday in his debut at the Montreal Masters 1000, where he fell 6-4 and 6-1 to American Taylor Fritz, ninth favorite in the Canadian tournament that awards almost seven million dollars in prizes.

The player born in 9 de Julio, Buenos Aires province, said goodbye in just one hour and 14 minutes of play against the American ranked 13th in the world. His last challenge had been at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where after the victory in the debut against the Portuguese Nuno Borges (43), he had been eliminated in the round of 16 against the Italian Lorenzo Mussetti (16).

The other Argentinean still in the tournament, Tomás Echeverry (38), will play the round of 32 on Thursday against Russian Andrey Rublev, fifth seed and eighth in the ranking. In the initial round, he had dismissed Chilean Nicolás Jarry (24).

Navone’s bad streak on hard surface

This Wednesday was the Argentine’s debut in an ATP main draw on this surface, which has been difficult for him so far: he was never able to celebrate on it in his seven appearances, which included, for example, the qualifiers for the US Open 2023 and Australia 2024 and the Temuco 2022 challenger. Within the top 50, the Italian Luciano Darderi (32) shares the same frustration, although with three matches played.
